What exactly are those dark streaks on your roof? It is usually not dirt, soot or tree droppings. It is an algae growth with the primary species being Gloeocapsa Magma. This type of algae is contained in and transported through the air and tends to collect and grow on roofing structures. Natural pigments produced by this algae can cause roofs to turn dark brown or black.
Algae growth occurs in varying degrees in all areas of the U.S. especially those subjected to warm, humid conditions.

One cleaning method that should never be used is removal by pressure. Asphalt shingles have granules that are lightly attached to the surface of the shingle. The primary purpose of these granules is to deflect UV rays from the substrate of the shingle. Using pressure on a shingle can remove the algae but also will remove the granules which will shorten the life of the roof. High pressure could also force water under the shingles and damage the underlayment.
